AI as a Collaborative Partner: Exploring the Human-AI Interplay in Art.

AI as a Collaborative Partner: Exploring the Human-AI Interplay in Art by Glenn Miller
I view AI technology as a new artistic medium, one that allows me to curate and create digital art through the use of text prompts and selective curation. It is not about replacing human creativity, but rather about amplifying and augmenting it.
This involves generating intricate layers of positive and negative text instructions and carefully selecting the images that resonate with my artistic sensibilities. Through my refined prompts and curatorial interventions, I guide the AI to produce visual compositions that align with my unique vision.
In a way, this collaborative process can be likened to the practices of the old masters who often worked with apprentices under their instructions. Many of them, including Rubens and Rembrandt, produced works in a collaborative manner, yet these works were still considered to be creations of the master himself. Similarly, by working hand-in-hand with AI, a modern artist may need to have 'prompt engineering' skills in addition to traditional drawing and compositional skills. The AI can be seen as a virtual apprentice, assisting in the artistic process.
After guiding the AI, I further refine the raw images in various photo-editing software, often blending adjustments pixel by pixel. By actively participating in the creative interplay between human and machine, I blur the lines between the artist and the tools used, expanding the horizons of my artistic creation.
This use of AI challenges traditional notions of authorship, transforming the artistic process into a collaborative dialogue that embraces the evolving role of technology in the arts. The interplay between human creativity and AI technology brings forth a fascinating blend of perspectives, techniques, and outcomes, offering the potential to expand our creative horizons and inspire new forms of artistic expression.
In future articles, we will explore how AI-assisted art can be viewed as a contemporary form of Pop Art, examining the parallels and unique qualities that arise from the interplay between AI technology and artistic expression.
